Die Sinking EDM Capabilities

Die Sinking EDM (also known as Sinker EDM, Ram EDM, or Cavity EDM) is a specialized thermal-erosion manufacturing process. It uses a pre-formed, three-dimensional electrode (typically made of graphite or copper) to burn exact, complex cavities, blind pockets, and sharp internal corners into hardened conductive metals without direct mechanical contact. It is indispensable in modern mold making, aerospace, and precision tooling.

Advantages of Die Sinking EDM

Complex 3D Cavities

Effortlessly machines intricate three-dimensional shapes, blind pockets, and deep internal features that traditional milling cannot reach.

Internal Sharp Corners

Replicates sharp internal angles, tight radii, and precise square corners without the tool-radius limitations of rotary milling.

High-Hardness Materials

Effectively cuts any conductive material regardless of its hardness, including hardened tool steels and tungsten carbide.

Zero Mechanical Force

Avoids direct tool-workpiece contact, completely preventing clamping distortion in delicate or thin-walled components.

Exceptional Precision & Replication

Delivers high dimensional accuracy and fine surface textures by faithfully copying the pre-machined 3D electrode profile.

Multi-Axis & Planetary Flexibility

Enables advanced machining through C-axis rotation, helical interpolation, and multi-axis orbiting to expand geometric possibilities.

Die Sinking EDM Materials

RapidDirect’s Die Sinnking EDM services efficiently machine a wide range of conductive materials, including tough superalloys and hardened steels, ensuring precise and durable components for demanding industries.

Tool & Mold Steels

Ideal for hardened steels used in injection and stamping molds, effortlessly shaping high-hardness metals regardless of pre-heat treatment status.

Superhard Alloys

Easily processes rigid, wear-resistant alloys that are extremely difficult or impossible to cut using conventional milling and machining methods.

Aerospace Superalloys

Accurately erodes high-temperature and exotic metals critical for aerospace, defense, and power generation components demanding extreme durability.

Wire EDM Finishes

Due to its unique electrical discharge erosion principle, EDM leaves microscopic discharge craters, a recast layer (white layer), and certain micro-stresses on the workpiece surface. Therefore, depending on the product's application scenario (such as molds, aerospace components, or precision mechanical parts), several common surface treatment processes are typically employed to improve performance

Removal of Re-melted Layer & Micro-Cracks

Mild chemical pickling, electropolishing, or light abrasive blasting / grinding is used to remove this altered layer and relieve residual surface stresses.

Mechanical Polishing & Mirror Finishing

Manual polishing, ultrasonic polishing, or diamond paste lapping is performed to step-by-step refine the rough EDM texture ($Ra$) down to SPI A1–A3 mirror finishes or specific VDI texture standards.

Chemical Texturing / Etching

Following EDM, chemical etching is applied to bite uniform patterns into the surface, which requires the initial EDM baseline finish to be exceptionally consistent.

Surface Coatings (PVD / CVD)

Post-machining or polishing, parts often undergo PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) or CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) treatments, applying coatings such as TiN (Titanium Nitride), TiAlN, or DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon).

Cleaning & Deburring

Rigorous ultrasonic cleaning and rust-inhibiting treatments are mandatory to ensure the surface is completely free of oil, residue, and carbon black.
