What is Wire EDM?

Wire Electrical Discharge Machining (Wire EDM) is a highly precise, non-contact CNC machining process that uses controlled electrical sparks to cut through metal. Instead of relying on mechanical force like milling or turning, Wire EDM removes material by creating tiny electrical discharges between a thin wire and the workpiece—allowing for extremely accurate, low-stress cutting.Because the wire never physically touches the material, there is no mechanical pressure, no vibration, and minimal thermal distortion, making it ideal for cutting delicate, hard, or heat-sensitive components.

Advantages of Wire EDM

Ultra-High Precision

Reaches micron-level tolerances (±0.001~0.002mm) with advanced servo control systems.

High-Hardness Materials

Cuts any conductive material regardless of hardness, including hardened steel, tungsten carbide, and titanium alloys.

Zero Mechanical Force

Avoids direct tool contact to prevent distortion in thin-walled, delicate, or easily deformable parts.

Extremely Narrow Kerf

Uses ultra-thin electrode wires (0.1~0.3mm) to minimize waste and maximize material utilization.

Complex 2D Contours

Cuts intricate shapes, narrow slots, and irregular profiles effortlessly via multi-axis CNC programming.

Superior Surface Finish

Delivers exceptionally low Ra values, significantly reducing the need for secondary grinding or manual polishing.

Wire EDM Capabilities

Wire Electrical Discharge Machines (WEDM) are typically categorized into Fast-Speed WEDM (HS-WEDM), Medium-Speed WEDM (MS-WEDM), and Low-Speed WEDM (LS-WEDM) based on the running speed and feeding method of the electrode wire. These three types differ significantly in machining characteristics, accuracy, cost, and machine structural design.

wire edm
Comparison Dimension Fast-Speed WEDM (HS-WEDM) Medium-Speed WEDM (MS-WEDM) Low-Speed WEDM (LS-WEDM)
Electrode Wire Speed High-speed reciprocating (approx. 8 ~ 12 m/s) Variable-frequency reciprocating (combining fast/slow features) Single-direction low speed (approx. 1 ~ 15 m/min)
Electrode Wire Material Typically molybdenum wire (reusable for multiple cycles) Typically molybdenum wire (reusable for multiple cycles) Typically brass wire (single-use consumable, discarded after passing)
Machining Accuracy Moderate (approx. ±0.01~0.02mm) Higher (approx. ±0.005~0.01mm) Extremely High (micron-level, ±0.001~0.002mm)
Surface Roughness (Ra) Ra 1.2~2.5µm (relatively rough) Ra 0.8~1.2µm (better) Ra ≤0.1~0.8µm (mirror or highly polished)
Cutting Efficiency Relatively high (low efficiency for multi-cut passes) Moderate (supports multi-pass skimming) High and stable (supports stable cutting of large thicknesses)
Overall Operating Cost Extremely low (minimal wire and fluid consumption, cheap consumables) Lower (high cost-effectiveness, mainstream in the domestic Chinese market) Extremely high (high brass wire loss, expensive dedicated filters and resin)

Wire EDM Finishes

Due to its unique electrical discharge erosion principle, EDM leaves microscopic discharge craters, a recast layer (white layer), and certain micro-stresses on the workpiece surface. Therefore, depending on the product's application scenario (such as molds, aerospace components, or precision mechanical parts), several common surface treatment processes are typically employed to improve performance
